Sweeney, William John "Bill," age 85, of Davison (formerly of North Branch and Lapeer) passed away February 2, 2020. Cremation has taken place. Final interment will occur 10:00 AM Friday, February 14, 2020 at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
Bill was born November 4, 1934 in Flint, the son of John and Kathryn (Moran) Sweeney. He then lived in Lapeer where he attended school through the 11th grade whenn he fell in love with and married Doris Lonsberry. Bill enlisted in the US Army and proudly served his country while stationed near Fairbanks, Alaska. After completing his military service Bill and Doris settled down in North Branch, Michigan where he returned to school to earn his high school diploma and raise 4 loving daughters (Jeanie, Connie, Laurie, and Lisa). While earning his diploma, Bill worked at General Motors and also worked evenings at Woodward Chevrolet. During his off-time he built a cabin near Lake Margrethe in Grayling, Michigan. Many happy memories were made boating and snowmobiling with his family and friends. Bill also loved to attend the I-500 snowmobile race in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, with his friends. Sadly, after 26 years of marriage, Bill and Doris divorced.
He enjoyed raising limousin beef cattle, goats (which he raised and showed), a donkey (Lucass), and turkeys. He particularly loved spending many years with his special 70th birthday present, a Brittany Spaniel he affectionately named "Seventy." Bill retired from General Motors after 48 years service.
Surviving are: 4 daughters, Jeanie (John) Smoke of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Connie (Bob) Gerwolds, Laurie (Bob) Hodgkinson, and Lisa (Bill) Haver all of North Branch; 9 grandchildren, Misti (Brent) Hall, Jenipher (Jeff) Haver, Stacie Smoke, Trad (Andrea) Hodgkinson, Tiffany (Sean) Pung, Tosha Hodgkinson, Bill (Megan) Haver, Joe Gerwolds, and Ashlee Haver; 20 great grandchildren; sister, Kathryn (Jerry) Downey of Brookesville, Florida; sister-in-law, Beverly Whipple of Little Elm, Texas; brother-in-law, Dewain Hall of Grayling, Michigan; many nieces and nephews.
