KOBER, Stephen Emil, of Flushing, age 86, passed away March 18, 2026, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Born December 29, 1939 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Steve lived a life enriched by his passion for education, art, and exploration.
Born to Emil and Mary Beverly (Ballard) Kober in rural Ottawa County, as a boy Steve participated in 4-H with brother Dave and graduated from Sparta High School in 1957. To the end a Spartan, Steve earned his Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University and dedicated his career to inspiring young minds as an art educator. He taught at several schools across Michigan, including New Lothrop, and Flushing. His commitment to fostering creativity left a lasting impression on countless students throughout his years of teaching and his commitment to art education.
Beyond the classroom, Steve was an avid traveler who found joy in exploring the world. Among his many adventures, he held a special fondness for Hydra, Greece-an island that captured his heart and became a cherished destination. Steve leaves many friends on Hydra from his frequent visits.
Steve is survived by his brother Dave (Nan) his sister Marty and nieces and nephew Kristin, Travis, Heidi and Kelli. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy Kober Koetje.
