Obituary

Rita Miller was born in Kalkaska, Michigan, January 9, 1935, the daughter of Edgar and Gwendolyn (Sherwood) Tanner. She attended Michigan State University's nursing program, the "sno-caps" in 1954. She moved to Flint in 1955 and met and married Earl Miller. A licensed practical nurse, she was being groomed for a higher role to sit at a desk. But she had no interest. Rita was a hard and diligent worker and elected to continue as an LPN and do the "dirty work", working in the endoscopy center at Genesee Memorial Hospital for 30 years. She also worked every Sunday at Genesee Convalescent Care in Grand Blanc. Every day for those 30 years lunch consisted of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich: homemade wheat bread, natural crunchy peanut butter, and grape jelly. Sunday was baking day, and there was always an emergency supply of natural crunchy peanut butter in the pantry as well as a couple large jars of grape jelly in the fridge. That tradition continued until the day before her passing. Anytime there was bad news on tv, she'd put an extra jar of peanut butter on her grocery list. Retirement was dedicated to the service of her Lord, as well as to her children and grandchildren.  A lover of all creatures with wet noses, she homed several cats and dogs over the years. She was a ham radio tech for many years, callsign N8XOP. Rita was a true believer in Jesus, and was a member of the First Flint Seventh-Day Adventist Church for 50 years. She loved to talk about what heaven would be like and looked forward to the day when she'd be reunited with all her beloved pets again. Christ was the center of her life and her life reflected it. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl, and son Randall. She is survived by her sister, Lois, her son David, grandchildren Jeremy, Brittany and Jordan and one great granddaughter, Paityn.  A memorial service will be held 5:00 P.M., Saturday, June 27, 2026 at Flint First Seventh-Day Adventist Church, G-4285 Beecher Road, Flint Township.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Strong Tower Radio:  https://strongtowerradio.org/donate/
