Marvin Tim
Shickles
Dec 5, 1950 — Sep 14, 2025
Flushing
September 14, 2025, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Marvin Tim Shickles, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His passing leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his legacy of faith, love and curiosity will live on in every life he touched.
Tim was born on December 5th 1950, in Redford Township to William and Marjorie Shickles. From an early age, he had a heart for learning and a deep reverence for stories that connected us to the past. He pursued his passion at Eastern Michigan University, where he not only earned his degree in history but also met the love of his life, Sandra Belle. Beginning on May 5th 1973, their marriage was a partnership marked by devotion, laughter, and over five decades of shared adventures. Together they raised four children: Timothy Lee, William Leonard, Daniel Theodore, and Laura Edith, who were his pride and joy.
Guided by his insatiable curiosity and calling to share history, he earned his Master's degree in Museum Studies from the University of Delaware. Tim defined his career through his commitment to preserving stories and bringing history to life. He served as Director of History at Corinthian Hall in Kansas City, played a key role in the restoration of Union Station and the design of Science City, and ultimately concluded his career at the Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium in Flint, retiring in 2014. His work was not just a profession; It was his calling. A ministry of education and teaching communities the richness of their own stories.
For all of Tim's professional accomplishments, his heart was most alive under the open sky. Camping was not just a hobby, but a lifelong passion, woven into the fabric of family life. Yearly vacations were filled with campfires, the open road, and historical sites where he taught his children not only dates and facts, but the deeper lessons of courage, sacrifice, and perseverance. He also walked faithfully alongside each of his sons in their scouting journeys, guiding them all to the rank of Eagle Scout, and passed those same skills and values on to his daughter, ensuring that all of his children carried with them a love of the outdoors. Those trips, under starry skies and on hallowed ground, became sacred family traditions that shaped their lives.
In retirement, Tim continued to embrace adventure. He and Sandy traveled all across North America, exploring new places and finding joy in the simple moments together. He nurtured his creativity through woodworking and discovered a new passion in quilting. He lost himself in books of historical nonfiction, and delighted in sharing movies and stories with those he loved. Most of all, he treasured his role as "Grandpa", finding his deepest joy in the laughter and love of his seven grandchildren.
Tim's life was a testament to faith, family, and the enduring gift of curiosity. To know him was to be welcomed, taught, and loved—his presence will be felt in every story retold, every campsite fire lit, and every quilt stitched with care.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 19, 2025 at Riverdale Baptist Church, 5151 Calkins Road, Flint Township, Pastor Cory Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in Flushing Cemetery. Tim will lie in state at Riverdale Baptist Church where family will receive friends 11:00 A.M. until the time of services Friday.
