SMITH, M. W. "Mel," L.E., L.F.D., of Flint Township, age 79, died Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Shiawassee Hospice House. Private interment has taken place at Oak Grove Cemetery, Owosso Township, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held 2PM Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Plumb-Smith Funeral Home, G-1208 N. Ballenger Hwy., Flint Township, Pastor Leonard Kitson officiating. Mel was born July 6, 1937 in Flint, the son of Elton and Reda (Posey) Smith. He graduated Owosso High School in 1955 and then attended Flint Junior College. He completed his education at the Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago and graduated in 1959. He was granted a Michigan Mortuary Science License July 5, 1960. He served on the staff of funeral firms in Coldwater and Detroit from 1960-1970, and in the area as an independent contractor from 1970-1976. He was the Michigan sales representative for the Frigid Fluid Company of Chicago from 1976-1980. Mr. Smith retired in 2002 retaining a personal interest in various areas of funeral service. Surviving are: 2 sons, Parke Netting Smith and Vaughn Loring Smith; 4 grandchildren; brother, Lon E. Smith. Mel was preceded in death by his father, Elton L. Smith in 1986, mother, Reda E. Smith in 2002, brother, Larry G. Smith in 2011, and grandso,n Kyle A. Smith in 2016.
