Lawrence Alvin
Melancon
Jun 9, 1927 — Dec 21, 2020
Burton
Melancon, Lawrence Alvin, Age 93, of Burton, after an incredible life on earth entered the kingdom of heaven December 21, 2020 while at home. Larry is survived by his bride of 75 years, Christine, the love of his life. He is also survived by his five children, twelve grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren, as well as their spouses and significant others. Larry was born in Flint June 9, 1927. As a child growing up in the Great Depression he developed an extraordinary work ethic, which he passed down to his children. At a young age, he took on the responsibility of a newspaper route and later an ice cream route to help his family. He was such a dedicated employee of Standard Cotton, that he worked until 5 p.m. on his wedding day. However, he was laid off, but that did not discourage him. He walked the streets of downtown Flint looking for employment because he had a new bride and very little money. He walked into Wethered-Rice Jewelry Store, where he was hired as an apprentice. He was such a diligent and devoted employee that they eventually made him a partner. In 1965, he left Wethered Rice to pursue his own business. Larry bought the A&W on the corner of Clio and Pierson Roads. In 1970, he opened the A&W in Flushing. Throughout the years, Larry led by example. He mentored many employees by sharing his wisdom and work ethic. As an active Rotarian, Larry was honored by Rotary with the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition. Larry took pride in being the longest member of the Flint Rotary Club. Through Larry's faith, commitment, and love to our Lord, Jesus Christ, he was truly blessed. As a servant of Christ, he was able to bless others in many ways. He was one of three faithful men who funded the building of Judson Baptist Church. They also helped create Judson Christian Academy and went on to open schools in Haiti, while on missionary trips. Larry's love for God's people led him to give generously and graciously to those who were less fortunate. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Judson Baptist Church, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , or the charity of your choice .
