Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Ann P. Stewart, of Flint, age 96, passed away August 8, 2018 at Hyde Park Assisted Living, Flushing. Funeral services will be held 11 am. Monday, August 20, 2018, at Court Street United Methodist Church. Pastor Jeremy Peters officiating. Family will receive friends 1 - 8 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2018, at the Plumb-Smith Funeral Home, G-1208 N. Ballenger Hwy, Flint Township. Cremation will follow with final interment at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Court United Methodist Church in Flint, Michigan.

Betty was born in Flint, Michigan on March 25, 1922, the second child and only daughter of William and Ruth E. (Schram) Phillips. She attended Zimmerman Elementary School and graduated from Flint Central High School in 1941. She attended Hillsdale College. After her second year, she left college to enlist in the armed services, like her brothers.   After her basic training in the Navy, she was stationed in Washington D.C. where she met her future husband (Donald Charles Stewart) on a blind date.   They were married at Court Street United Methodist Church on the June 22, 1946. He preceded her in death on October 16, 2004. Family was very important to both Don and Betty. They lived in Virginia after their wedding until their second daughter was born.   They returned to Flint to raise their two girls. Betty was very active in her neighborhood (Mott Park), in the PTA at the Flint Community Schools, at Court Street United Methodist Church (where she attended for most of her 96 years), Fairwinds Girl Scouts and the Flint Public Library where she was a storyteller. Betty is survived by her daughters; Donna R. and her husband, Nickolas J. Garvin of Glens Falls, New York; Elizabeth (Beth) Ann Stewart López and her husband, Henry López Morantes of Mumbai, India; grandchildren: John Stewart Garvin, his wife Korina Garvin, Michael Andrés López Stewart, Melissa Andrea López Stewart, Marco Alfonso Stewart López. She was preceded in death by her brothers: James E. Phillips and William Jewett Phillips Jr.
